An independent co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged from 13 to 19 with a linked junior school
About the School
Bede’s is known for its distinctive educational philosophy which focusses on educating the whole person and giving equal priority to academics, co-curricular activities and pastoral care. Bede’s prides itself on offering a personalised education to its pupils, celebrating children with a huge range of interests and talents, moulding school life to fit the individual rather than the other way around.
Bede’s offers a broad academic curriculum offering GCSE, A level and Pre-U, vocational BTECs and a one year Pre-Sixth GCSE programme with EAL included as a core component. Our experienced EAL department help all second language students with language development and provide tailored subject support as well as including ESOL, IGCSE or IELTS or Cambridge Advanced Certificate.
At Sixth Form nearly a half of all grades last year were at A*-A. At GCSE 78% of grades were at 9-5, equivalent to A*-B.
On the sporting front, the School runs year-round Academies in Cricket, Football, Hockey and Tennis and has coaching partnership arrangements with local sporting bodies including Brighton and Hove Football Club. Bede’s are champions of the Hudl Independent Schools League which brings together the top 9 footballing schools in the UK. Bede’s was recently recognised in The Week magazine as “best for sport” amongst UK independent schools, with the Good Schools Guide saying it had sporting facilities to “serve a small town”.
More broadly the School offers a Co-curricular Programme which offers over 100 different options encompassing the creative and visual arts, academic enrichment as well as the visual and performing arts – both of which Bede’s also has a strong reputation for.
All pupils at Bede’s have their own personal tutor who supports them during their time at the school, ensuring that they settle in well, are happy in their boarding house and are thriving academically. The tutor is also a point of contact for parents.
Boarding at Bede’s is of a very high standard with one British guide describing them as “as amongst the most swanky we have seen”! At weekends, pupils are kept busy with a programme of social events in the evening as well as a full activities programme and a range of trips.
Staff and Student Quotes
“Bede’s has a rich history of welcoming international pupils and we take great pride in this diversity. Our houses, and the school community more broadly, celebrate the international nature of our community in a range of ways, from representing national flags of pupils in the boarding house, to sharing national cookery skills. Currently we have over 30 nationalities represented in the school. Our international pupils are encouraged to become a part of the local community through our local volunteering programme and our EAL department lead theatre trips specifically for international students to broaden cultural experience as well as measure their progress learning English. In the course of the last three years we have seen Italian, German and Hong Kong students take on the role of Head of School and we have benefitted hugely from their leadership and insights.”
“My name is Joana and I’m from Macau. I came to the UK to improve my English but I have learned so much more. At Bede’s I joined Crossways House and to begin with, I suffered from home sickness but that soon goes. The friends you make in your boarding house are the friends you keep forever. You know everything about them. They are not just friends; they are like sisters.
I have also become a lot more independent and confident in myself. My mum used to do everything for me but now I get myself up in the morning and make sure I have everything organized. I know who I am now. When I look at the news, I know what I feel and think about issues. I feel well prepared to go to uni as well and am ready to live by myself. Bede’s has done such a good job – I know now that in the future I can succeed.”
