About the School

Founded in 1884, Ellesmere is a co-educational boarding and day school which offers students between the ages of thirteen and eigthteen a platform for academic success and personal development. Wide-ranging curriculum and extensive activities programmes allow each student the opportunity to advance in a range of disciplines, whether in the Arts, Music, Drama, Sport, or to develop leadership skills via the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) or our ILM programmes. Ellesmere College treats every pupil as an individual and where ‘success’ is doing the very best you can; a philosophy that all parents, pupils and staff recognise and support wholeheartedly.

Students joining the Middle School (13-16) enjoy a stimulating and extensive academic programme and an even wider range of curricular and co-curricular opportunities. Ellesmere students regularly celebrate excellent i/GCSE results with over a third of all grades in the top A*/A, and more than half of all grades awarded in the A*/B.

In Sixth Form (17-18), students have a choice of a Pre-Sixth Course, A-levels, BTEC, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or the International Foundation Programme (IFP). The College takes the preparation of students for Oxbridge and the USA very seriously and the Academic Enrichment Programme offers extension activities in all subjects including the EPQ, ILM and SAT Programmes;

Music is a key part of Ellesmere life and the standard of music & drama is very high, with  Ellesmere being the first UK independent school to hold the Arts Council’s Arts Mark Platinum Award.

For sports enthusiasts, Ellesmere is one of only nine schools in the world to be an accredited World Academy of Sport (WAoS) Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC), which provides greater flexibility to athletes balancing their studies with busy training and competition schedules.  With the nationally renowned Titans Swimming team, 7 sporting academies, and incredible state of the art facilities, pupils can train in every Olympic discipline.

Ellesmere prides itself on committed leadership team, an excellent set of professional teachers, a globally recognised set of qualifications and a broad approach to pupil development via an expansive co-curricular programme.

Staff and Student Quotes

“We recognise that building a sense of community and family within Ellesmere College is a critical element to our student’s development, especially as the school is their “home away from home”. Ellesmere College provides a dynamic environment with family values at its heart. Students from many countries are all part of our boarding community, and it is this truly global outlook that makes boarding and the opportunities presented within it so popular and valued by all.”

“Ellesmere College was the best choice I could have made for high school and Sixth Form, a school where there is ‘’a lot more” to the Ellesmere education experience. They will be the best few years of your educational life and one I have been blessed to have experienced. The door and experiences available will shape the nature and direction of your choices long term. I would not change a thing about my 3 years, that is to say I wish I could have stayed for longer!– link to full testimonial below:
