About the School

Oakham is well known and loved for being a friendly, caring and unpretentious school. As one of the largest co-educational boarding schools in the country, the school is able to offer an astonishing range of opportunities and facilities, including a rich and varied curriculum with a choice of 26 GCSE options, then two distinct pathways at 16+: the IB Diploma Programme or A-level, Pre-U or BTEC courses.

Students achieve consistently excellent examination results and benefit from exceptional careers advice, for which the school was recently awarded the Gold Career Mark. Pupils are taught how to conduct effective and meaningful research via FOSIL (Framework Of Skills for Inquiry Learning), which has been developed to provide an excellent foundation for study at university and research in pupils’ future careers.

Through outstanding pastoral care, Oakham nurtures all aspects of pupils’ intellectual, physical, mental and spiritual development during every stage of their Oakham journey. The House structure ensures students have an age-appropriate space to develop and grow, surrounded by staff who are expertly trained to both support their needs and to challenge them to become independent, thoughtful, and responsible young adults.

In addition to the Housemaster/Housemistress and tutor team, each House benefits from the support of a Matron. For further pastoral support, the school has a brand new Medical and Pastoral Centre with a team that is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Beyond the classroom, over 500 individual music lessons are taught each week, there are five major drama productions every year, and an award-winning Art & Design Department is a hive of creative activity. Oakham also has a national reputation for Sport, offering 30 different sports to students of all levels – from enthusiasts to elite athletes. Students are able to choose from over 130 activities to take part in each week. In addition to Duke of Edinburgh, CCF, and Voluntary Action, options range from dance to robotics, e-textiles to sailing

Students also benefit from the School’s location close to Rutland Water, in the heart of rural England. They are able to enjoy the safety of living and working in a beautifully green campus just a few minutes’ walk from Oakham’s historic town centre and amenities, yet at the same time Oakham’s excellent road and rail links mean that London, Birmingham and Cambridge are all within easy reach.

Staff and Student Quotes

“Oakham School has a long and proud history of welcoming students from all over the world. We offer exciting cultural experiences, a blend of modern and forward thinking practices and the opportunity to meet and make connections with a wide range of people. International boarders are a part of our friendly boarding family and are given plenty of encouragement and support to help them become confident, independent-thinking individuals who combine a strong sense of self-worth with respect for other people.”

Mrs Carly Latham
Senior Housemistress

“From the very first day at Oakham there is a feeling of being very welcomed here. Everyone is so supportive and friendly, so your boarding house quickly becomes your home away from home. Boarding life at Oakham gives you a great opportunity to make friendships with people all over the world and to experience traditions of a British boarding school at the same time. This isn’t only about making good memories, but also about getting an invaluable experience in communicating with different people and dealing with difficulties. Oakham is definitely the place which you will always look forward to returning, while you’re away.”
